Rare Antique 17th C Flemish Brass Tobacco Box St Anthony Padua Madonna & Child
DESCRIPTION
Antique 17th C brass oval Flemish tobacco box. The lid is engraved with a representation of the Madonna and Child with an inscription. A small angel head surmounts this inscription and has a further inscription below. A beautifully rare and exquisite piece from the 17th C Spanish Netherlands.
Inscribed: Vroude Kevelaar (Virgin Kevelaer)

haar te kevelaar (Come pilgrims, honor this virgin with diligence; then she

The underside carries an image of Antony of Padua holding his attributes, the Christ Child and a lily.
Inscribed: S. Antonius van Padua (St. Antony of Padua).
The borders and sides are decorated with leaf scrolls along with lined and corded rims for structural integrity.
A number of similar boxes are in the collection of the Niederrheinisches Museum für Volkskunde und Kulturgeschichte at Kevelaer.
A great addition to any religious, brass box or Dutch tobacciana collection.
MEASUREMENTS
Tobacco box measures 5" long by 2.75" wide by 1.5" thick and weighs just over 5 oz.
CONDITION
In good condition considering age and use with a couple of light dings (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
